Kiz Kulesi is the Turkish name for the Maiden’s tower or Leander’s Tower. That is located in a small islet close to the shores of Uskudar District, which is located in the Asian part of the Istanbul, Turkey.
Kiz Kulesi was built by Alcibiades, who was an ancient general Athenian General. The main purpose of the construction of the building was to control the ships movement of the Persian troops. Later the tower was enlarged and rebuilt as a fortress. During the time this tower has suffer several restorations and also modified by the Ottoman Turks. The latest modifications that the tower has suffered were on 1998 where steel supports were added to the fortress tower.
During many years the tower was used as a lighthouse and was one of the most important during that time. Nowadays, the tower has been modified and it is now used as a popular café-restaurant. Here you can enjoy the view of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman capital.
You can get to the tower by taking a dolmus or bus to Kiz Kulesi, once you are there if you do not see the tower the only thing you have to do is walking south until you see the tower. Next step is to take a boat that departs every 15 minutes. If you are interesting on eating there you can catch a boat from Kabatas at 20:00, 21:15 and 21:30 and return at 23:00, 23:45 and 0:30.
