Museum of Painting and Sculpture

Museum of Painting and Sculpture The Museum of Painting and Sculpture of Istanbul (Istanbul ResimveHeykelMüzesi – IRHM) was inaugurated on September 20, 1937, in the suites of Dolmabahçe Palace by a decree of the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Ataturk. It turned into the first art museum of the country and the only painting and sculpture gallery in the city until very recently.

The permanent collection of the museum displays:
  • A panoramic view of the Turkish plastic arts, including:

    • World famous artists works
    • An impressionist collection
    • Sculptures
    • Military painters works

  • A collection of copies from the most famousEuropean paintings
  • 85 paintings – including the collection of “Elvah-iNaksiye” (Besetted Paintings) – and other paintings from:

    • Turkish painters for “Meclis-iMebusan” (Chamber of Deputies)
    • Famous European and Turkish painters exhibited in the “Muze-iHumayun” (Museum of the Empire)

  • 2,000 paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries
  • 400 sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries
