Public Transport of Istanbul

Since ancient times, Istanbul has been one of the principal cities in the world due to its strategic location and its massive population. That is why the city is the main financial and cultural center of Turkey nowadays. In addition, this town receives thousands of tourists from different parts of the world each year, not only for its amazing historical landmarks but also for its touristic facilities in the city center. The public transportation in Istanbul is one of the most modern in Turkey because the city offers several ways of public transportation that include the following:
  • Buses.
  • Metro.
  • Trams.
  • Ferryboats.

One of the favorite methods of transportation in the city of Istanbul is the public buses because of the affordable prices and the fast service. In addition, travelers can reach the principal sights and landmarks of the city by bus. These buses are known as IETT Buses and they are available almost all the day. On the other hand, the majority of the buses are usually crowded in rush hours; so, it may not always be the most effective method of public transportation.

In this fashion, it is recommendable not to take the public buses during rush hours. Fortunately, there are some private buses to use for people who want to take a private tour. Tourists who want to use the public IETT Buses have to get the Istanbul Kart Transit Pass (Transportation card.)

The Ferryboat is another spectacular way of transportation that tourists can take in order to enjoy the sea breeze and some stunning sea landscapes. Even though this way of transportation not quite used, it is perfect to know the area properly. The principal interesting areas that tourists can reach by the ferry boat are Eminonu, Karakoy, Uskudar, Kadikoy and Haydarpasa, just to mention a few.

The Metro, as any other metro in the world, is modern, cheap and efficient in Istanbul. There are two important lines that foreigners have to know if they want to use this transportation system; we are talking about the M1 which depart from the famous Aksaray square to Ataturk airport and the second line M2 that runs from Sishane square to Ataturk Oto Sanayi. The metro is operated and managed by the Istanbul Ulasim. The Metro is available from 6:00 AM until midnight every day.

The city of Istanbul also includes Tram lines to foreigners. In fact, there are modern trams providing transportation services in specific places. The majority of them are available to the public from 6:00 PM until midnight.
